Local Area

Bamburgh is the ideal place to take in Northumberland’s dramatic views, white sandy beaches and iconic castles. It is situated on the Heritage Coastline which runs from Druridge Bay in the South to Berwick in the North and is designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Visitors will enjoy visiting the traditional fishing villages that line the coast or taking a boat trip to Lindisfarne and the Farne Islands. Inland Bamburgh is just a short drive from the bustling market town of Alnwick with its fabulous castle and gardens while the rolling hills of the cheviots and the Scottish border country are also within easy reach.

The village itself sits on one of Northumberland’s best beaches overlooked by Bamburgh Castle. With stunning views of the Farne Islands, Holy Island and the Cheviot Hills, in 2021 Bamburgh was voted number 1 of the best seaside towns and villages by Which.

Walkers will enjoy the coastal tracks and more demanding inland trails while those looking for a little more exhilaration will find surfing, horse riding and mountain bike trails on the doorstep. The Northumberland coast is also home to some of the best and most challenging links golf courses in the UK. In 1920 Bernard Darwin wrote of Bamburgh’s own links course in Golf on the LNER, “I imagine that the golfer’s eye must be more often taken off the ball at Bamburgh than on any other course, the view is so compellingly beautiful that we really have to look at it no matter how critical the shot.” The course remains as stunning today as it did then!

There is nothing like the fresh Northumberland air to build an appetite and visitors looking for somewhere to eat are spoilt for choice. In Bamburgh there is a range of cafes, pubs, gastro-pubs and restaurants where visitors can wash down the freshest locally caught seafood with a glass of wine or a pint of local cask ale. The surrounding area offers everything from fish and chips to fine dining at luxury spa hotels and everything in between. Check out our Eating Out and Out & About Guides for more detail.
